Winnie

I remember the day my dad brought you and your sister Minnie home. I was only eight or nine, and now I'm twenty-seven. It seems like it was only yesterday when we made you guys a makeshift bed between the cupboards and garbage can because it was the only place you and Minnie seemed to feel safe. I remember how you would climb into my lap and rub your face on my arms and face when I'd come home from school crying after being bullied. I remember I'd cry on your fur and you wouldn't mind. You got me through so many tough times and I am so appreciative of you for that. As you got older I always tried to convince myself that you would never die, and that there couldn't possibly be a world without you. Alas, the sad day came in January when Mom and Dad called me to tell me to come and see you one last time because you'd be going on your last trip to the vet. Your kidneys were failing at the age of seventeen, and it felt like I was about to lose a sister and a best friend. You and I grew up together, and we had such a close bond. My only regret is that I couldn't find the strength to hold your paw and be with you as you died, and be there for you, like you had been there for me.
But now you're with Minnie and you're happy and free from suffering. Even though I thought there could be hardly a world without you, I have come to realize there is. Despite the pain and suffering, we had to move on, but we haven't forgotten. You're still in our hearts, even four years on. You and Minnie are deeply missed by all of us. Love Erin, Allie, DJ, Mom and Dad.
