Cassidy

My ginger boy, you came to us after you were left in the curb after a horrific road accident - I was working as a vet nurse when you came in. You put up with awful, invasive treatments for over four months living with us in practice as no one had come forward to claim you, and then..it was Christmas eve. 'Who will take Cassidy home for a few days?' my boss asked, obviously knowing the answer! The site of those huge loving goggling green gooseberry eyes, so full of meaning and joy, had had me at 'this is RSPCA number is No 72684'. Of course, he never went back! He was my baby from the word 'go', my cuddle buddy, my little furry soulmate. He was the most giving, adoring and adored boy I could ever ask for. We shared fourteen years together, and then one day I found him struggling to breathe in the bath. He was all swollen up in his tummy - and terrified, we got him to the vets straight away. They diagnosed instantly that he had last stage heart disease. He had his pleural sacs drained no less than three times in the two weeks following, no anaesthetic, and each time he came back to us looking chirpy, but older. But he was losing weight and condition. One evening I was out to collect my car from the garage, and was delayed (I still can't forgive the man that delayed me) when my father called to say that Cassidy was dying, had keeled over in the kitchen. Of course by the time I was home, a mere ten minutes later, my boy was gone. I was heartbroken. My little fella, died without me there. After all you'd been through Cass, I feel so guilty for not having been there for your last cuddle. You were my golden treasure, and I will love and miss you forever.
